The holiday season is a wonderful time for family and friends to gather together for meals or celebrations. But when your home has a septic system, you may be nervous about hosting parties, holiday feasts, or having out of town guests stay in your home. While it is true that excessive use can put stress on a septic system, there are several things that you can do to ensure that you don't have any problems with your septic system while you have guests in your home:
Have Your Septic Tank Pumped In Advance
When you know that a lot of people will be visiting your home, it is best to have your septic tank inspected in advance to see how full it is. If your tank is getting full, make an appointment to have it pumped so that it is completely empty before the holidays. This is especially important if you live in a smaller home with a smaller septic tank; the last thing you want is holiday memories that include a septic system failure.
Make Sure Guests Know The Do's And Dont's Of A Septic System
Septic tanks can be more sensitive than municipal sewage systems, so it is important that guests using your bathroom understand what can't be flushed down the toilet. In general, the only thing that should be flushed down a toilet with a septic system should be toilet paper that is rated as being safe for septic systems.
Flushing paper towels, baby wipes, or feminine hygiene products can produce a clog in the system that can be disastrous. There is no need to speak to each guest about the situation-- consider just leaving printed cards in the bathrooms in your home explaining that you have a septic tank and requesting that only toilet paper be flushed.
Consider Renting Portable Restrooms
If you are having a very large gathering or several overnight guests at the same time, you may want to look into renting portable restrooms. Today's portable restrooms are not the dirty port-a-potties of the past -- many vendors offer portable restrooms that are actually small rooms and have a sink and water tank for easy hand washing. A portable restroom may be an especially good idea if your home only has one bathroom; not only will a portable restroom reduce stress on your septic system, it will also prevent long lines to use the bathroom and make your gathering much more comfortable for everyone.
